Teh Funny & Teh Awful Truth

Spaghetti Happens asks in comments to the below post "Bob Harris & Teh Funny":

What does "teh" mean? (I really hate being the last one in on the joke.)

Actually, the last one in on the joke here is me. The sad fact is I'm using teh funny without being sure I understand it myself, which reminds me of some of my less glorious moments from 6th grade. I just want Belle Waring to like me. (She is a frequent teh funny user.)

That said, I believe the answer is simple: it's a way people often misspell "the funny" while typing. Beyond that, I'm not sure where "the funny" comes from. Maybe "show me the funny," if such a phrase exists, in which case I assume it's derived from "show me the money."

If the internet overbrain has an explanation that's more accurate, or less accurate but more entertaining, please tell me.

You are correct. It comes from the common mispelling of "the". However, IMHO, it has become a way to express the idea of "way" funny or "way" winger.

Just my impression from its use.

Forgot something.

No one should be shy about asking what terminology is being used. I only recently learned what IIRC (If I Remember Correctly) means.

The nice thing about blogs and the internets is our ability to pass on knowledge. We use shorthand terms, but readily explain them to newer readers.

Somewhat (un)surprisingly:

In leet, it is often commen to use intetional typos for emphatic or sarcastic effect.
eg.
ZOMG!!!!!!11!1!11oneoneeleven
OMG stands for oh my god. The Z is there as an "accident" while pressing the shift key. The 1s are again "accidently" releasing the shift key. They type ones etc. are for additional comic effect.

I too have often worried that I'm misusing "teh," because I read somewhere that it can be used to telegraph "one-handed typing," if you know what I mean and I think you probably do. But I like it anyway, and I think it's generally more wholesome than that; it seems to me it's usually a modifier that means something like "very" (I see "teh pretty" a lot), a usage that wouldn't apply to "the" spelled correctly.

Historians will later note the Teh offensive was the turning point in the war.

Well, I wasn't in on this whole "teh" thing before, which makes me feel like I'm in fourth grade again and I don't know what this D&D game is that the other kids are playing.....or like my German teacher who was teased by her friends because her mother said she was too young to attend Hitler Youth meetings.

Um....anyway. I will now refer to Jon as "teh Schwarz". !

TEH comes from a misspelling of THE.
The whole TEH adjective construction is very common in "LEETspeak", that heinous keyboard jargon favored by those who actually live online. It seems to be a kind of augmentive. "U R TEH GHEY" seems to be a harsher admonishment than simply "UR GAY". So, "TEH FUNNY" is more than just funny. The things you learn playing online games.

This is much more complex than I thought. I too was in the dark on the exact usage, but I had a foggy notion. Thanks to everyone for the input. I think I'll stick with Standard English usage myself. My brain hurts.

I just looked up "teh" on wikipedia th'other day. I think the definition is purty good, though the idea of language that has only a written, and no oral, form reminds me a bit too much of religious texts in Latin and Aramaic, only worse. Computers are crappy for communication. They are entertaining but they have very narrow bandwidth for emotion. A dialect built around computer screens says to me that people are living much of their lives in seclusion and emotional distance. It is the linguistic equivalent of Dilbert comics.

You've been missing out by not spending enough time on online forums with 13 year olds! If you actually were in the sixth grade, chances are you would have been clued in much sooner! I first encountered "teh" in the usage "Joe is teh sex," meaning "Joe is a hottie."

Another favorite of mine is "pwned," a variant of "owned," meaning "burned" (as the lads of That 70s Show might say). Since "pwning" is one of your talents, I do hope you will take that on as a phrase in your own repertoire!

Doesn't "teh" belong to the Poor Man?
