They May Have Won All The Battles, But We Had All The Good Songs (And Phrases)
What is the "underlying nature" of America's right-wing? David Neiwert, using all his writerly skills, has the answer here: it is "a festering cloaca of senescent amorality."

Donald, maybe the real problem here is your longstanding prejudice against cloacas.

Posted by: BRG at May 26, 2006 09:59 AMIs that to the tune of "A Modern Major General"?
A festering cloaca of senescent amorality,
A guano-stained orifice of reptilian ancestry,
We are the kings of Fox News, and we lie about our wars and spies,
From WMD to Valerie Plame, in order to the truth disguise
We're very well acquainted, too, with matters evangelical
We understand what gays and guns will win us each quadrennial
About John Murtha's treachery we're teeming with a lot o' news
With many cheerful facts about the troop morale his truths do screw
With many cheerful facts about the troop morale his truths do screw
With many cheerful facts about the troop morale his truths do screw
With many cheerful facts about the troop morale his truths do screw
We're good at blaming victims of both hurricanes and 2-ton bombs,
We'll stick by The Decider until sweet Armageddon comes,
In short, in matters domestic, defense or constitutional
We'll kiss the ass of that quizzling because we are not rational.
We'll kiss the ass of that quizzling because we are not rational.
We'll kiss the ass of that quizzling because we are not rational.
We'll kiss the ass of that quizzling because we are not rational....
Thanks for the interesting links Jonathon. I think that sounds right, the republicans have been working on building their base all these years and the religious right have been working on being a strong part of it as well and it is just what the progressives need to be doing, building a grass roots base. But of course the progressives are split between the so-called centrist democrats who believe that being somewhat like the republicans on issues is the way to win elections. However that kind of thinking focuses on tactics rather than doing what progressives actually believe in. The DLC is focused on being strong on military almost a kind worship for anything military because that is how they see winning elections yet it is creating a rift in the Democratic Party itself. Granted I would rather have a centrist democrat in office then another Bush but this centrist posturing may be what is keeping the democrats out of power. Tom Tomorrow has a very good post related to this topic.

It is true that Bill Clinton by being a centrist stole the republican's thunder which is why they hated him so much to the point that Clinton had them foaming at the mouth but situations in politics do not always remain static and what was true yesterday may not hold true today. It may be time for progressives to stop focusing on appearing as meat eating war hawks and start focusing on issues that matter to middle class America. To be honest I really don't know.
If Neiwert is right--and I think he is--then we are being ruled at this moment by people whom the political process has selected not for their rationality and capabilities as governors but for their pathologies, e.g., their membership in the vast right-wing festering cloaca of senescent amorality.
Talk about living in fear; that's the most frightening thing I can think of right now.
