Clinton & Obama On The Environment

Writer and activist Glenn Hurowitz has written an interesting piece in the Politico about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama's behavior on some environmental issues. The Clinton incident is minor but telling:

Clinton's moment of truth came in 2005, when executives at the International Paper mill in upstate Ticonderoga, N.Y., were pressing to cut costs by burning old tires to provide power for their operations. Tires are one of the most toxic fuels known to man...

Whereas the Obama stuff is major and horrible:

Exhibit A is Obama's enthusiastic support for "coal to liquid" technology, which allows auto fuel to be squeezed out of coal...

So why would he support it? What's more, why did he vote for other anti-environment policies, such as President Bush's 2005 energy bill, which funnels more than $27 billion in taxpayer subsidies to big polluters?

In other Clinton news, check out this campaign video of hers. Generally I can't watch any politicians, including ones I vote for. Their presentation is always so glaringly false and/or incompetent it makes me want to gouge out my eyes and pour molten silver in my ears.

But god help me, I actually found her funny and charming here. I had to imagine the smell of burning tires to snap out of it.

When ever I see Hillary Dillary’s puffy little face I smell the stench of dead rotting bodies but yes this is indicative of just how sincere Hillary and Obama are. Their concern for little children is so heart rending though of course if they were here to defend their positions they would tell us they really need the money for 2008 to be elected and once elected they will do more of the same because at that point they will be thinking about the next election after that and so on and so on.

Hillary is charming without a doubt but for the life of me I could not figure out which important issues she was discussing, you know, the kind voters are concerned about like Iraq, Iran, the environment and jobs. Whoops, I forgot, this is the new age of pop politics and our politicians just do not discuss anything of import because if they did discuss them we might discover we cannot support their policies.

Behind every great fortune lies a great crime. Including, of course, political fortunes.

"Had to imagine the smell of burning tires" - hilarious. Thanks for this!

I live immediately beside an interstate highway, on the other side of which are several industrial concerns, so I don't have to imagine the smell of burning tires. This has, however, suggested a new way to classify the many presidential candidates, or perhaps politicians generally: according to which of the various neighborhood odors I associate them with. This should help to keep in mind some of the small distinctions in their policies and characters which are sometimes all one has on which to base a decision.

the burning tires pneumonic(a pneumatic pneumonic?) is pretty clever.

Whenever I think I'm in danger of being awed by a politician's charm I remind myself of the scene in the Simpsons in which Homer confronts the peacenik that Lisa has a crush on regarding pressuring her to camp out up in a tree to prevent the bad guy industrialists from cutting it down, and Homer says,

"I'm sorry, I was lost in your eyes."

But smell adds quite another dimension.

It's "mnemonic," Sir Versen.

Bill Richardson is clearly the best qualified Dem candidate for president, unless Al Gore decides to run. There are a couple of other folks I'd probably prefer to Ms. Clinton.

That being said, the likelihood is great that she will be the Dem nominee, and it will behoove all of us to support her and encourage all of our contacts to support her. Given the realities of American politics, Ms. Clinton, for all her flaws, is greatly to be preferred to anyone the Repugs might nominate, and would probably be a fine president, as presidents go.

So take your shots, but have the self-respect to admit they are cheap, self-serving, and, in the end, detrimental to our public debate and perhaps to our chances to get the country turned around, if it's not too late already.

Hilarious.

Whatever else they might be, both assertions are correct. The first is correct because she has extensive, solid, and largely underestimated strength among every significant component of the Dem electorate. The second is "correct," except to those who like what the conservatives have done to the country and will be content with more of the same.

Some pessimists think that we've reached rock bottom, so we should settle for Hillary.

Not me. I think there's a lot further to fall before we reach rock bottom. Since the 2004 election, it's all been for the LULZ. The 2006 election and the recent war funding bill proves that the LULZ just keep on coming.

*I* could put up with at least another four years of Republican administration (if not longer), and am genuinely concerned that Democrats take hold of the rudder prematurely. All we'd get is more of the same, middle of the road plodding.

I say, let the Republicans and Neocons do what they do well -- radicalize a LOT more independents and Reagan Democrats before things can get start to get better.

If it starts looking close, I'm willing to sacrifice my vote to Nader.

You know, just by a cursory glance I think I would prefer Ron Paul to Klin-Ton. Also, why would it 'behoove us' to support her, even if she does win the nomination? I don't have to support anyone in their candidacy. "Business as usual" may be an improvement on Bush, but it's not something I want to devote my energy or my enthusiasm to, thank you. I'll continue to spit in the eye of all Presidential candidates who strike me as evil and power-hungry, which I think Jon has nicely demonstrated Ms. Clinton to be via this post.

no way I will vote for clinton or edwards. maybe obama, if he stops talking about threatening Iran.

dennis j kucinich for the win, as the kids say.

he is running again, isn't he?

"Self-respect" is not a persuasive term when it's used by someone advocating a radical abrogation of common sense and principles, Acorvid. A wise crow would know that. Crackpot realism of the kind you're pushing has caused more problems than any poo-flinging chimp in the Oval Office.

I'm sorry, but where the fuck do you thing you are? Is this site one of your Koswack democrat-fellating pwoggie-bloggie sites? Are there other pissant do-nothing pundit-wannabes here?

How about this. Go drag your disgusting condescending ugly face back your republicrat masters and tell them that you're too fucking stupid to be out in the world with people who have a spine. M'kay?

Obama also voted for the bankrupcy bill, which of course benefited the rich --does anyone knows what was Hillary's vote on this?
