So the Senate just passed an amendment to the defense spending bill sponsored by Joe Lieberman. It requires David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker to produce a report every sixty days on Iranian involvement in Iraq.
The vote was 97-0. Here's some of what the amendment says, quoting Zalmay Khalilzad:
We can't say whether Teheran is supporting Al Qaeda, but we do know that Al Qaeda people come here from Pakistan through Iran. And Ansar al Sunna, a partner organization of Zarqawi's network, has a base in northwest Iran.
Huh. This all seems reminiscent of something that happened a few years ago, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is.
AND Who were those three Senators who didn't vote, you ask? Were they Clinton, Obama and Biden? Ha ha ha ha no. Brownback (R-KS), Johnson (D-SD), and Vitter (R-LA).
Posted at July 12, 2007 11:50 AM | TrackBackWhat? WHAT? WHAT? (sorry, my what's can't get any bigger than that.) Was this the same Zarqawi who spent the last few months of his life waging an incredibly bloody war against Shia Islam, to the consternation of even bin Laden and Zawahiri? Ah, I can see why Iran would want to support him. Makes sense. I'm glad our Senators can follow that train of logic, right off the tracks and into the ravine.

Posted by: saurabh at July 12, 2007 01:52 PMArr, sorry for the double post. Addendum: Ansar al-Sunna isn't even based in Iran, it is based in north central Iraq, is comprised mostly of Kurds and Iraqi Sunnis, and is, generally, not even remotely related to Iran.

Posted by: saurabh at July 12, 2007 01:56 PMAlso: I wonder if the Iranian Parliament commissioned a report every sixty days on American involvement in Iraq.
Posted by: saurabh at July 12, 2007 01:58 PMOr maybe the Iranian Parliament could require a report every 60 days about US involvement into Iranian affairs. I seem to remember some black ops stories a month or so ago and some explosians in Iran that was blamed on the MEK. Goose, meet gander.
Posted by: Dee Loralei at July 12, 2007 03:49 PMWell we all know Vitter was busy elsewhere.
Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
Posted by: SPIIDERWEB™ at July 12, 2007 06:55 PMHey, they don't even give David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker a Friedman unit?
What kind of bill is that?
I give up. All is hopeless.
Posted by: SPIIDERWEB™ at July 12, 2007 07:00 PMSenator Johnson, of course, is recovering from brain surgery. Maybe the other two were missing 'cause Brownback was trying to save Vitter's soul from the poon demon, and hosting a fundraiser-cum-revival.
Wow. Politics stops at the water's edge, I think is the standard way of referring to the fact that Democrats are often every bit as nauseating as Republicans on foreign policy issues.
Posted by: Donald Johnson at July 12, 2007 08:03 PMYep WE'RE gonna need a REAL LARGE ARMY, REAL SOON. Time to reinstate the LOTTERY DRAFT.

No, you can say they aren't, you fuckwits. OTOH, the Iranians can't just wipe them out. That would be like Bush sending in the FBI to shoot all the members of the Aryan Nation. The base wouldn't like it, and it would hugely strengthen the radical faction's support.
So.......Kucinich voted FOR this bill?
Posted by: jusataguy at July 19, 2007 06:09 PMI believe he's a rep. not a senator. . .
