No Such Thing As Too Much Reuel Marc Gerecht

Building on this, here are more of Reuel Marc Gerecht's impressive insights into the mideast, from December, 2001:

I think Iraq must be the next place we go after Afghanistan. It is, more than anything else, the one issue that has cracked the awe of America in the Middle East, and I think it is the one issue that we must handle if we really are serious about regaining the essential fear and respect without which American interests and American citizens are simply not safe...the primary element that gives you respect in the Middle East is the awe that you possess...you must command fear...

At the same time he also told us this about the dirty Arabs:

They admire, even if they can't or choose not to emulate, many of the Western habits—individual initiative, personal discipline, civic responsibility, personal and corporate honesty...

Yes: personal discipline, civic responsibility, personal and corporate honesty. You can see how he'd want to highlight this, since nothing embodies these qualities like Gerecht & his friends.

BUT: Don't let his musings about the moral retardation of all Arabs make you believe he doesn't care deeply about Iraqi democracy. Here he is, explaining earlier this year why we must stay in Iraq:

...much of Washington would have gladly compromised democratic principle [in Iraq] for dictatorial strength.

Herr Gerecht the geneticist:

"That's one of the reasons [Iranians] want to have nuclear weaponry anyway: it's because they have terrorism in their DNA"

How could you forget CLEANLINESS, which is next to you know what.
I mean, how often does your average Iranian brush his or her teeth? I bet they could use some of those whitening toothpastes we got. Oh, the white teeths' burden!

GERECHT: In 1900, women did not have the right to vote. If Iraqis could develop a democracy that resembled America in the 1900s, I think we'd all be thrilled. I mean, women's social rights are not critical to the evolution of democracy. We hope they're there. I think they will be there. But I think we need to put this into perspective.

To play Devil's Advocate, it depends on WHICH part of the West he is talking about...800 million people on three continents is a very wide net, you know...Finland qualifies as much as the USA, don't it?

"Corporate honesty"?

Wow. This Gerecht's views on the character of Arabs is amazingly similar to the stereotype Muslims in the Middle East have of "al-Ameriki." Growing up the phrases I heard used to describe Americans were "spoiled and decadent, with no self-discipline," and "always lying to themselves and to us," and, by the way, given one of the comments above, and since Muslims are required to bathe at least once a day and wash the head, lower arms and feet before praying (five times a day), and also required to wash the lower parts after relieving ourselves, ethe long-held stereotype of Westerners always has been how dirty and bad smelling they are.
Irony rules the world.

Wasn't there some "dictatorial strength" over there before?

Jon S.,
please tell me that Gerecht is made-up so that you can score easy rhetorical points about how deluded the ruling class is.

Jibril: I hear you. I KNOW I'm decadent and spoiled, I do like to believe I have SOME self discipline,(but you may well be right on that one too--gambling) I worked many years in Carnivals so I've lied to myself too.(and it may be spring before the creek thaws out???)

I first became aware of Gerecht when he was playing apologist for the Pentagon's propaganda efforts in Iraqi newspapers. I've since seen that was the tip of the iceber - err, mountain of crap.
