Bitter Virginians Cling to Guns
By: Bernard Chazelle
I received an email from a local student association asking me to observe a moment of silence on April 16th in remembrance of the Virginia Tech massacre. I didn't teach that day so I was in no position to order anyone into silence. But since I wanted to be part of the communal spirit, I tried to find out how much had been done to prevent the next shootout.
Judge for yourself:
In 2007 there was a 73% increase in concealed-handgun permit applications, according to the Virginia Supreme Court. That rise of more than 44,000 applications over the previous year was, gun-rights activists believe, a direct result of the bloodshed in Blacksburg.

The government cannot defend everyone all the time and indeed this administration cannot defend anyone anytime, let alone OUR schools and shopping malls. Guns exist and in fact many are manufactured in USA. AS long as the technology and knowledge exits to make guns then someone WILL have one. (and they may not always be sane)
Posted by: Mike Meyer at April 18, 2008 05:24 PMWait, Mike. I was on the phone talking to Nancy about impeachment and didn't have a chance to compliment you earlier on your impeccable logic.
It's the same logic that says all drivers should
speed up at an intersection. The faster you go through it, the less time you are vulnerable to a collision.
Oh wait there's more to this line of logic. Travelers to India often complain of stomach ailments. My advice: get your stomach removed before you go!
On the anniversary of the massacre,I heard some moron on the radio representing a student gun rights group advocating for firearms on campuses.
Anyone who has lived in a college dormitory and experienced first hand the responsible use of alcohol and other intoxicants will recognize the wisdom of such a policy(many years ago, while visiting a friend in his dorm room,we were getting high when we heard a 'thud' on his door-when he opened the door to investigate,he discovered an arrow stuck there, shot from a crossbow by the drunken half-wit across the hall).
Bernard: May I point out the shooter had a gun. He had murder on his mind. If he had to he would build his own weapons to kill those people. The world is STILL full of those kind of folks. (and getting fuller)
Posted by: Mike Meyer at April 19, 2008 03:41 PM30 people, one intersection collision only kills, maybe 8 to 10 at thre most. A mass murder or serial killer keeps killing tolll hes stopped.
Posted by: Mike Meyer at April 19, 2008 03:52 PMBernard: Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT saying that is the only way to solve the problem or deal with the problem as I don't see a solution for insanity. First let me say I would ABSOLUTELY trust YOU to own any gun or any number of guns. But then I come from a primaraly "hunter/ gatherer" culture (Wyoming) and YOU may be from something more agrarian or urban. I'm sure if closer attention were paid to the students perhaps this could have been avoided, who knows? On the other hand one cannot always say it will be a student that will attack.
Posted by: Mike Meyer at April 19, 2008 09:13 PMBobS., spaces go after periods and commas.
Posted by: Annoying copyeditor at April 19, 2008 11:59 PMThank you. I probably learned that sometime in the past. I'll try to adhere to that practice.
Does the space rule apply as well when a period that's part of one's tag is immediately followed by a comma?
Its like, "what goes around, comes around". YOU look at all the vinegar and piss mixed with BLOOD WE have poured out on the earth in just the last decade. What's the karma on THAT? World ain't flat no more. Its a sphere, a ball, spinning, and what goes around, comes around.
