Rachel Corrie's Birthday

Today, April 10th, 2009, would have been Rachel Corrie's 30th birthday. As weird old Mr. Lincoln said: "It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us."

Happy Birthday

I don't think getting run over by a bulldoser or a tank helps anyone or furthers any cause, that I can see.

Posted by: Mike Meyer at April 10, 2009 02:04 AM

My understanding is getting run over by a bulldozer was not her main goal.

Posted by: Jonathan Schwarz at April 10, 2009 02:08 AM

Ooh, but the people at RedState have an earful for you!

Posted by: strasmangelo jones at April 10, 2009 08:56 AM

Ah, a Dartmouth Review-ish rant. Takes me back.

Posted by: Dennis Perrin at April 10, 2009 09:39 AM

It would be interesting to hear what Palestinians think. They were the people she was concerned with, after all.

Posted by: Ryan at April 10, 2009 10:22 AM

It's not as though she were run down by a Zionist bulldozer on the quad at Evergreen State.

If you are going to try to block a bulldozer you might get run over. That seems like an elementary principle. Running her over was ugly but not a major crime.

Posted by: Seth at April 10, 2009 11:02 AM

so Mark, were you born a vicious, hate-filled asshole or did you only achieve this state after years of unflagging effort?

Posted by: ran at April 10, 2009 11:08 AM

The sick irony of all this is you know the RedHaters and all the rest still wacked it to her picture. And the thought of a tank running somebody over. And tanks in general.

Posted by: Wrong at April 10, 2009 11:17 AM

Seth, if the bulldozer driver saw her (which I don't know) and ran over her then it was a major crime. It's called murder. I know that's one of those fancy legal terms, and it's just sheer coincidence that, non-lawyer that I am, I've heard of it. Now if he didn't see her then it was an accident, which is the usual defense, but there's no middle ground here.

Would you sympathize with the tank driver in that famous Tiannamen Square photo if the tank had run over the guy standing in its way?

Posted by: Donald Johnson at April 10, 2009 11:18 AM

Donald - Sure he would. The T- Square guy is not an icky GIRL. This is the sort of person who smacks it on the sly to gay porn, then blames women for not being hawt enough to stop him from being gay.

Posted by: Gavel Down at April 10, 2009 11:22 AM

Seth, Your comments are ugly but not a major crime.

Posted by: cemmcs at April 10, 2009 11:33 AM

It's not as though she were run down by a Zionist bulldozer on the quad at Evergreen State.

Yes...I too find the birthdays of people who've been run over by bulldozers paid for with my tax dollars to be perfect occasions for wee witticisms. It's just one of the many ways I like to demonstrate my basic humanity.

Posted by: Jonathan Schwarz at April 10, 2009 11:38 AM

I was pretty sure that I'd hear ugly, hate-filled, revolting rants in response to your post here.

But today, what irks me about these disgusting vermin is their hypocritical assertion that Ms. Corrie didn't know what the situation in Israel was.

The people saying this are the same bunch of cretins who got the USA into Iraq and who now say Iraq is a success. They're the people who have only the faintest grasp of the Israel-Palestine conflict (nothing much beyond knowing the names of the latest Palestinian leaders so that they can hurl insults at them).

These moral abominations should just shut the fuck up about subjects that they're so dismally ignorant. And of course they should shut the fuck up about their efforts to be rude insulting bullies to the memory of a dead heroine.

Whoever told them that expressing degrading sexual fantasies about a young woman's corpse was a way to look "cool"?

What detestable idiots.

I wonder when it was the last time a wingnut lost their life in defense of a principle.

Frankly I really can't think of one.

Jimbo, the wingnut M.O. has always been to sacrifice the lives of others in defense of a principle.

I didn't say anything about her looks or masturbating or what her intentions were or anything. I didn't say that the driver knew she was there or not.

If you stand in front of a bulldozer there is a good chance you will be killed. If suicide is your idea of an effective political strategy, then she is your woman.

You can't do civil disobedience and then be outraged when the world doesn't stop in its tracks for you. Putting yourself in harm's way and getting killed doesn't make you a victim.

Only a movement that lionizes suicide bombers as martyrs could see this woman as heroic rather than stupid.

Posted by: Seth at April 10, 2009 12:33 PM

I hope that when my time comes to do the right thing and hold fast to my beliefs that I have half the courage and conviction of Rachel Corrie.

Seriously - fuck you to all the people who belittle this woman. She gave her life for what she believed in, and the rest of you have probably never volunteered at a soup kitchen.

Posted by: Christopher Wing at April 10, 2009 12:33 PM

If you stand in front of a bulldozer there is a good chance you will be killed.

Yes—likewise with tanks, as Donald Johnson points out. When oh when will the world finally WAKE UP and remove that Chinese moron from this list.

I have many more comments like this, and look forward to blessing you all with each and every one of them.

Posted by: Jonathan Schwarz at April 10, 2009 12:40 PM

Seth,

And what the fuck do you know about the event in question?

You weren't even there.

She's was an American who died for a cause she believed in. You can believe she was wrong, but why the hell does she deserve the response she elicits from your side of the aisle, where "stupid" is so mild it almost serves as a compliment?

The paroxysms of hate that supporters of Israeli imperialism descend into when they hear her name is testimony both to their low moral achievement and the desperation of their belief systems.

Posted by: thwap at April 10, 2009 12:52 PM

Difference: the Chinese tanks were invading a peaceful demonstration. The guy didn't walk into a battlefield or a military exercise to make a point about pacifism.

RC entered a manifestly dangerous demolition site in order to halt the demolition. Clearly a dangerous thing to do. And less heroic.

If a Zionist bulldozer had been destroying a protest on the grounds of Evergreen State and RC had stood up to it then I would see a parallel.

In the actual case the comparison is specious.

Posted by: Seth at April 10, 2009 12:58 PM

Gutless turds of Seth's stripe get all pissy and whiny when real activism, the kind where you put your life or freedom on the line, is mentioned. Both pwogs and freepers are like that, although for different reasons.

Posted by: AlanSmithee at April 10, 2009 01:03 PM

Thwap: I'm sorry, did I make some claim to special knowledge of the event?

And were you there?

I have no hatred for Rachel Corrie whatsoever. However it is silly to be outraged that someone who put themself in such a dangerous position got hurt.

Posted by: Seth at April 10, 2009 01:06 PM

:Only a movement that lionizes suicide bombers as martyrs could see this woman as heroic rather than stupid."

What's wrong with suicide bombers? I think they're quite admirable in sacraficing themselves in defending their country from fucking fascists.

Posted by: jenny at April 10, 2009 01:07 PM

Alan Smithee-Since all you gutfull and heroic guys are so gung-ho to die in the cause, how is it that any of you are still alive? Surely there are plenty of opportunities for you to martyr yourselves. Why aren't you in Hebron right now plotting your Attentat?

Or does your "real activism" end at vulgarly insulting people you don't agree with on anonymous message boards?

Posted by: Seth at April 10, 2009 01:12 PM

No Seth, I wasn't there. But I'm not the one insulting a young woman who died for her beliefs am I?

Perhaps your time would be better spent trying to calm down the more enraged members of your team who behave so disgustingly.

The fact that you're more concerned with calling her "stupid" and us naive, deluded, etc., than with dealing with scum-bags saying all manner of vile insults about her, speaks volumes.

Posted by: thwap at April 10, 2009 01:13 PM

Jenny-Hmmm. Most suicide bombers in the news lately seem to be blowing up groups of their co-religionists in Pakistani mosques or Iraqi street markets.

How exactly is that a fight against "the fucking fascists?"

Dummy.

Posted by: Seth at April 10, 2009 01:16 PM

"If suicide is your idea of an effective political strategy, then she is your woman."

More ridicule of someone who died while nonviolently protesting.

Seth, the most charitable interpretation of your remarks is that you said something stupid and for face-saving purposes don't want to back down.

Posted by: Donald Johnson at April 10, 2009 01:16 PM

Donald Johnson-Quite to the contrary friend. I don't think I said anything stupid at all.

What are you referring to?

Posted by: Seth at April 10, 2009 01:20 PM

The most charitable interpretation of Seth's Cheeto and Dr. Pepper fueled remarks is that he's a spineless yellow-ass retard who gets his little kicks running down people who, unlike him, are vertebrates. The fact that he's a fucking sub-moron is neither here nor there. Sure, he's a moral cretin, but I think it's unfair to bring up his innate stupidity, DJ.

Posted by: AlanSmithee at April 10, 2009 01:32 PM

The guy didn't walk into a battlefield or a military exercise to make a point about pacifism.

Nor, of course, did Rachel Corrie. Or if you somehow define it that she did walk into a "military exercise," so did the Chinese guy.

In any case, it is interesting to see the mentality of people like Seth. At least the little green football types are honest psychotics who wear their frothing hate on their sleeves. It's more disturbing to see the bizarre fairy tales that Seth et al tell in order make living with themselves easier.

It's also funny the way that Seth—who I'm certain has many times in his life spoken fervently about how he'd support Palestinians if only they'd engage in non-violent resistance organized to gain international support—has contempt for anyone who engages in non-violent resistance organized to gain international support. There's almost always an exact correlation between those two things.

I will always be fascinated with this aspect of human psychology and how it's essentially mandated by a person's place in the social hierarchy. There have always been Seths all over the earth—in the mid-levels of the Chinese communist party, among the secular technocrats of Saddam Hussein's Iraq, in El Salvador's lower-middle-upper class. They're always and everywhere the same.

Posted by: Jonathan Schwarz at April 10, 2009 01:32 PM

While it's true, as you point out, that Seth is a total hypocritical asshole, I think you've missed the main motivation behind his tiny fisted little screeds. It's the tension his hypocrisy creates in the form of cognitive dissonance that compels dipshits like Seth to embarrass themselves with their online temper tantrums.

Posted by: AlanSmithee at April 10, 2009 01:40 PM

Jon-you give me way too much credit. First of all I wouldn't support the Palestinians even if they were non-violent, simply because I find their supporters so annoying.

Second of all I get fired from everything and would make a terrible technocrat or apparatchik-i would be purged immediately for my bad attitude. Do you imagine that I could function even adequately in any structure demanding ideological rectitude?

Rachel Corrie went into a demolition site and got hurt. Why is this so shocking to repeat? It seems perfectly natural to avoid such places if you expect to remain safe.

Posted by: Seth at April 10, 2009 01:42 PM

These comments in general are making me despair for humanity, and are hereby terminated.

Posted by: Jonathan Schwarz at April 10, 2009 01:47 PM

You'll note Seth is under the vastly mistaken impression that anyone, anywhere, would want him his support. For anything.

Posted by: AlanSmithee at April 10, 2009 01:51 PM

Seth,

I didn't know you were that completely ignorant. It wasn't just a "demolition site." It was part of an imperialist project, destroying peoples' homes in order to facilitate the expansion of colonial settlements.

It's actually a pretty nasty undertaking, and the thing is, it's financed to a great degree by US tax-dollars.

So, Rachel Corrie didn't want to be even the slightest bit complicit in such behaviour, so she went to protest. And she was killed.

And for that, apologists for Israeli imperialism subject her to an endless stream of vile insults.

You would never support the Palestinians because ... ah, forget it. What a tiresome snot you are.

But this: "Or does your 'real activism' end at vulgarly insulting people you don't agree with on anonymous message boards?"

Um, that's what you and yours were doing here. Remember? We, on the other hand, have been defending the person you were "vulgarly insulting."

Posted by: thwap at April 10, 2009 01:53 PM

Rachel objected to somebody's home being destroyed. Anyone can understand that.
